From Primetime to Off Peak
Updated: Oct 12

Primetime was released in theaters a little over a week ago and the consensus is mixed. We see everything from praise for Robert Pattinson’s acting gravitas to scrutiny on the continuity of the plot lines compared to real life. Chris Hansen admitted that he found Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of him to be bizarre. Hansen commented on how the entertainment industry can alter and warp real life in their productions for shock value. Let’s discuss a few plot elements and establish fact versus fiction:
Traumatized Decoy: Fact. To Catch a Predator filming left countless decoys in emotional distress and left a lasting impact on many actors.
Hansen’s Extramarital Affair: Fact. Hansen was spotted with a news reporter in 2011 and was rumored to have another mistress while married to his wife at the time, Mary Joan Hansen. However, the movie places this event on the timeline incorrectly.
Fight for the Primetime Slot: Fiction. To Catch a Predator was always a rotating Dateline special in a primetime slot.
D.A. Suicide: Fact. A Texas district attorney committed suicide during an investigation on his communications. It was said that he did not go through with the meet up but they believed he would have.
Robert Pattinson’s Overall Portrayal: May or may not have been exaggerated for entertainment value. Pattinson’s acting was without a doubt exceptional. As far as the details on whether or not certain aspects were accurate; many discussions have been circulating online but Hansen is not impressed with the way his image and likeness was utilized.
