Surreal Art and The Mind
Updated: Oct 12

Surrealist art may invoke feelings that we don’t understand due to its unconventional visual effects. A surreal piece of art may deal with time, identity, other dimensions, vision, the mind, and much more. According to Merriam-Webster, surrealism is a style in which an artist or creator blends imagery and events that are unrelated in an unusual or dreamlike manner. There are so many layers to this type of art that leave a lasting impression long after you've left the presence of the piece. As noted in Psychology Today, a surrealist can “reveal the true nature of the human condition.”
The beauty of surrealism is the way it makes you feel and creates a strong effect on the brain. When we see a painting with a faceless man holding two dripping eyeballs or a never-ending grandfather clock with too many arms to count, we are presented with a mental dilemma. We can either believe what we see in front of us to be true artistically, or the logical parts of our brains will fight the visuals with what we know to be true. Not only does this type of art help us practice our problem-solving skills. Looking at abstract art can also increase curiosity, provoke emotional responses, and act as mental exercise.
