Updated: Oct 12

The vibrant, hazy hues of neon signs trigger an emotional response in our brains. It can improve mood as our environment impacts the brain. Neon signs have a way of making us stop and stare. It is the reason why so many businesses opt for the fluorescent blue and red open sign whose letters dance across the shiny glass of the store window. Some of the most popular cities boast the most beautiful collections of shimmering city lights. This includes endless neon signs in gritty, yet magical places like New York City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Atlantic City.
Neon signs draw our attention the same reason a sunset or flash of lighting does. It is hard to look away from the man made wonder that is a neon sign. The illumination in the night sky is what triggers our pleasure receptors. Similar to the dings and rings from slot machines in casinos paired with a burst of flickering lights. Neon lighting creates an emotional experience and can have a profound impact on the beholder’s mood.
